SUBSTANCE ABUSE
PREVENTION PROGRAMS
The following is a summary of the Quest Recovery Center Prevention
Programs for fiscal year 2004-2005:

CONFLICT RESOLUTION and ANGER MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS:
Skill enhancement activities for approximately 3,150 high risk youth
ages 5-17 in Lawrence, Limestone, and Morgan Counties. This program
presents effective methods for resolving conflicts, managing anger, and
preventing violence. Information and group activities are directed
toward assisting youth with conflict resolution skills, communication
training, positive interpersonal skills, problem solving, decision
making, assertiveness, refusal skills, and critical analysis of
messages. The sessions will be targeted at youth that have been
identified for disciplinary reasons such as aggression, difficulty
handling conflict, poor interpersonal skills, acting out in class, etc.

PREVENTION EDUCATION PROGRAMS:
Prevention Education Programs to a total of approximately 2,600
high-risk youth ages 5 – 18 in Lawrence, Limestone, and Morgan
counties. Comprehensive prevention education programs will explore the
facts about HIV/AIDS, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Information
will be directed toward assisting participants with problem-solving,
decision-making, assertiveness, refusal skills, coping skills, and
critical analysis of messages promoting potentially unhealthy
behaviors.
Science/evidenced based programs to be used include: “Too Good for Drugs
and Violence – After School Program” (ages 5 – 13); Reality Works
“NIC-o-teen Smoking Education Program” to prevent tobacco use (grades 5
- 8); “Keep a Clear Mind” (middle school youth); NIDA “Junior Scientist
Program” (early elementary youth); NIDA “Mind Over Matter” (middle
school youth); NIDA “The Neurobiology of Drugs” (adolescents); Substance
Abuse Education curriculum materials (adolescents) such as “Marijuana:
At Your Own Risk” – Sunburst Company. Films/videos, didactic
presentations, interactive activities and other stimulating material
will be utilized. All programs will be appropriate to the target
population.

PREGNANCY PREVENTION EDUCATION PROGRAM:
Provides teen
pregnancy/alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention program
services using Reality Works’ “Baby Think It Over” program.
This service is provided in Lawrence, Limestone, and Morgan Counties at
schools, churches, youth group locations, and the Boys and Girls Clubs.
We have had extremely positive feedback from the community about this
program. Sessions include information on HIV/AIDS prevention,
abstinence, alcohol, tobacco, and other drug education, and child
abuse/neglect issues.
