The Mental Health Center is a public, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has
provided mental health services to the people of Lawrence, Limestone, and
Morgan Counties since 1967. Our organization was originally established under
the federal Community Mental Health Center Act of the early 1960's and later
under Act 310 of the Alabama State Legislature. While we are not a state or
government agency, our services and programs are guided by a Board of
Directors which consists of 21 persons who are appointed by local government
bodies. The
Mission of The Mental Health Center is to do what we can to provide treatment,
education and assistance to people affected by mental health problems. Under
the guidance of the Board of Directors and their appointed Executive
Director, the MHC has continually improved the quality of services
provided, the efficiency of the delivery system, and the attractiveness and
array of services in order to thrive in one of the most competitive arenas in
the State of Alabama. We have evolved from an organization that at one time
was wholly dependent on federal grants, through a transition period of being
almost totally dependent on state funding to the current situation of earning
most of our revenues through fees for services, contracts and self pay. Our
flexibility in the services we have provided and the means by which we have
provided them has fostered an ongoing interaction and mutual respect between
our organization and the community. Our commitment to meeting the community’s
needs has resulted in continual organizational changes that have been in
response to and in anticipation of shifting community needs. Our
programs have evolved over the years to cover the spectrum of mental health
needs from children to geriatrics and virtually every point in between. Our
programs include; The Decatur Counseling Center; Moulton- Lawrence Counseling
Center; Athens -Limestone Counseling Center; The Albany Clinic; Quest Recovery Center and Options. Services
include treatment for the Seriously Mentally Ill (SMI), Severe Emotional
Disturbance (SED); counseling and therapy for adults, children and families;
substance abuse treatment; In-Home treatment services; case management
services; geriatric programs; employee assistance programs; psychiatric
services and others. Additionally,
we have our own in-house professional development center that not only
provides continual training and professional development of the staff, but
also for the professional and lay community as well. In short, The Mental Health Center has evolved to become a vibrant community based mental health center that is anticipatory and proactive in providing mental health services for the community.
