The Stepping Up Initiative of North Central Alabama is a collaborative partnership between the Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Lawrence County Commission, Limestone County Commission, Morgan County Commission, local hospitals, local probate offices, local law enforcement and numerous other agencies that seek to improve the quality of life for people dealing with mental health and co-occurring conditions.

The Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama is proud to be the lead organization in bringing The Stepping Up Initiative to north central Alabama.

Who is Stepping Up for?

The Stepping Up Initiative of North Central Alabama is targeted for inmates about to be released from the Lawrence, Limestone or Morgan County jails or people attempting to access mental health services through hospital emergency departments.

Purpose of Stepping Up

To reduce recidivism at local county jails and unnecessary readmission to local hospital emergency departments for persons with a mental illness or co-occurring mental Illness and substance use disorders by connecting them with appropriate community services.

Stepping Up is a national initiative to reduce the number of people with mental illnesses in jails and is the result of a collaboration between the National Association of Counties, The Council of State Governments Justice Center and the American Psychiatric Association Foundation.
